The classic chair was designed in the 1920s by the Austrian-born American architect Marcel Breuer, who developed it in part to express his disapproval of earlier styles of furniture production prevalent at the turn of the century which relied heavily on dovetail joints, dovetails, and lacquering – craftsman techniques that were costly and labor-intensive but not completely satisfactory aesthetically when scaled up to larger pieces of furniture such as dining room chairs, seats for easy chairs or full-length chaise lounges.
Breuer chairs are elegant and comfortable. They will last using the different materials they’re made of for many years to come, creating worthy family heirlooms.
With Marcel Breuer Chairs, style is never an afterthought. Bauhaus-inspired seating easily fits into modern environments or spaces retrofitted with industrial elements while maintaining its beauty over time.
These sleek classics are made with high-quality materials including steel reinforcing bars, making them durable for generations to come. Whether you’re searching for your first desk chair or looking to find something into which all five of your kids will fit comfortably–Breuer offers the perfect style that marries comfort and customizability with lasting durability.
Breuer’s contribution to modern furniture has been significant and has had a huge impact on architecture and design. His furniture designs of the 1920s and 1930s took modernists’ tendencies to new heights by adding sculptural focuses and abstraction. Breuer is also known for his artwork, sculpture, illustrations for books, movies, logos, and glasses designs. He was creative director at Knoll International from 1950 until 1982 when he retired due to declining vision that eventually led him to go blind in 1988.
The Marcel Breuer chair is regarded as one of the most beautifully designed chairs in all of history. The seat, back and frame are made from tubular metal with a curved structure which allows for greater stability with a lighter frame.
